Tobias Post combines painting, digital light art and sculpture in an artistic practice in which colour, form and movement reach beyond the limits of any single medium. The Bochum-based artist develops paintings, interactive installations and sculptural works from the interplay of free gesture, set rules and spatial relationships. With digital tools he has developed himself, he extends his painterly work into time and interaction: pictorial spaces change, forms rearrange themselves, and the movements of the audience become part of what happens in the work.

Alongside his own work, Post takes on curatorial and cultural-policy responsibility. He leads the BBK exhibition team for the International Garden Exhibition 2027 in Dortmund. His area of responsibility covers the exhibition projects in the compressor hall of the Kokerei Hansa, the Alte Schmiede and an administration building in Dortmund-Huckarde. Post is regional spokesperson for the Western Ruhr at BBK Westfalen and, in this role, a member of its extended board; he is also a delegate to BBK NRW. For “Giganten & Kunst” at the Kokerei Hansa he was part of the curatorial team in 2026 and at the same time showed his own works.

Post sets out the conceptual framework of his work in the “post-digital model of positing”. In it, art arises from decisions about forms, rules, gestures and connections. Art informel, concrete art and figuration serve him as points of reference for developing and examining his own work. Perception, too, plays an active part: which objects, orders or meanings come to the fore in a work depends on the chosen points of view. For Post, digital processes are a natural part of this artistic present.

One focus lies on complexity as deliberate design. Post investigates how individual forms build groups, how repetitions and deviations create rhythms and how different orders interlock. He works with concentration and reduction as well as with superimposition, contradiction and accumulation. The result is groups of works of differing character, connected by his engagement with these relationships.

There are concrete connections between the media. Colours and structures from his painting become components of digital works; digital forms are developed further as pictures and sculptural objects. The Studio and the Sculpture Garden document this ongoing work. The interplay of projected image, virtual form and physical sculpture extends his investigation of surface, space and figuration.

His installations show how closely these questions are tied to the individual work: “FLACHER RAUM” explores the shift between flat appearance and form that can be experienced in space. For “Giganten & Kunst”, Post developed the group of works “BRUTAL VERDREHT”, which takes up the rotation, compression and flow of the historic compressors at the Kokerei Hansa. “DORNENSTAUB” carries colours and structures of the painting series “VERLUST” into interactive image processes. The exhibition venue, the painterly origin and the movement of the viewers become part of the works in different ways.

Post’s exhibition activity includes, among others, the Westfälische Salzwelten in Bad Sassendorf, the Museum Wendener Hütte, the Kokerei Hansa in Dortmund, the Forum Kunst & Architektur in Essen, the Künstler*innenhaus Dortmund, the Kunstverein Duisburg, the Artothek Oberhausen and the Deutsches Elektrizitätsmuseum in Recklinghausen. His paintings have also been shown at the LWL-Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen and at the Hoesch gasometer on Phoenix-West in Dortmund. The different museum, industrial and sacred spaces each give his works their own spatial and thematic references.

His writing accompanies his artistic practice. In texts on the post-digital model of positing, on complexity and on transparent art juries, Post deals with authorship, perception and the standards of artistic judgement. He asks how decisions in the work and in its evaluation can become visible and open to discussion.

Tobias Post was born in Bochum in 1969. He studied computer science with art as a minor subject at TU Dortmund and ended his studies early in favour of founding his own company. His many years as a software developer and entrepreneur form the technical basis of his present artistic independence. Since 2022, artistic practice has been at the centre of his work. Post is a member of BBK Westfalen and of the Werkkreis Bildender Künstler (WBK).
