Fluid – Spalten

Liquid colour

Studio Dossier PDF

This work is an investigation: it explores how far a flowing visual language can be pushed technically and how it can be realised as a one-man enterprise.

A sphere as in Veil – Spalten: a landscape of column bands, three tracks with rolling cubes. But the rods have disappeared. Over the sphere lies a closed skin of liquid colour, deep and rich, wet like fresh lacquer. The light brings out the colour: on the crests it lights up, in the valleys it sinks into darkness.

The colour is in motion. When the sphere turns, clicks into place or springs back, the mass sloshes; waves run across the surface and fold it. The cubes travel through the colour: each presses a deep funnel into it, a bulge rises up at the rim, and behind it the surface closes again. As they go, the cubes give off their own colour – they drag streamers through the base colour, which swirl and slowly dissolve again.

During fast turns and violent movements, points break away at the crests in the colour of the wave, white only at the highest peaks. They drift in fractal patterns, gather into veils and drift off into space. The camera moves freely around the sphere, the palettes change slowly.

Fluid is the seventh series after Minimal Quaderspuren, Minimal Sphere, Raw Cube, Minimal Ring, Ring Quader and Veil: the sphere becomes liquid colour.

The landscape of this work: column bands in columns, three tracks with cube objects made of 3 × 3 × 3 cubes.
