Frost

The scene is kept almost monochrome. Between the branches the field of needles stays flat on the ground, on the branches the crystals grow up – so the pattern arises not from light but from growth.

The pattern creeps slowly onward and blooms anew at intervals. Touching an object makes a frost flower of its own open up at the point of contact.

Frost is crystal growth that everyone knows: out of a solution, along the branches, outwards. Salt grows by the same principle. The museum itself is about exactly that: the permanent exhibition “Das weiße Wunder” at the Westfälische Salzwelten leads into underground vaults full of crystals that formed more than 250 million years ago, shows their lattice structure under salt microscopes and tells how brine becomes salt on the Hellweg — Bad Sassendorf is an old salters' town.

“Frost” can be experienced at the Ferromone family festival “Farbexplosion” at the Westfälische Salzwelten, Bad Sassendorf – on Saturday, 17 October 2026, 6 to 10 pm.
