Geode

As inside a druse split open: a wall of crystal wraps around each cavity, coarse and steeply inclined at the edge, ever finer towards the outside. Calm rings breathe through the walls from the inside outwards.

The ground is not a plane but a landscape of valleys and rises that slowly changes into another form. The crystals follow it, and the light on them traces the ridges. A touch makes the cavity draw breath for a moment.

A geode is a cavity lined with crystal on the inside — exactly the image that lies in the ground beneath Bad Sassendorf. The museum itself is about exactly that: the permanent exhibition “Das weiße Wunder” at the Westfälische Salzwelten leads into underground vaults full of crystals that formed more than 250 million years ago, shows their lattice structure under salt microscopes and tells how brine becomes salt on the Hellweg — Bad Sassendorf is an old salters' town.

“Geode” can be experienced at the Ferromone family festival “Farbexplosion” at the Westfälische Salzwelten, Bad Sassendorf – on Saturday, 17 October 2026, 6 to 10 pm.
