Adern

The crystals do not sit everywhere but on veins: curved bands that run through the field. On the vein they stand dense and upright; towards the edge they become thinner and lie flatter.

Again and again a narrow pulse travels outwards through the fibre paths and makes the crystals grow up along its way. A touch sends such a pulse off from the point that was touched.

In the ground salt does not lie as a plane but in seams and bands — just as the veins run through the rock here. The museum itself is about exactly that: the permanent exhibition “Das weiße Wunder” at the Westfälische Salzwelten leads into underground vaults full of crystals that formed more than 250 million years ago, shows their lattice structure under salt microscopes and tells how brine becomes salt on the Hellweg — Bad Sassendorf is an old salters' town.

“Adern” can be experienced at the Ferromone family festival “Farbexplosion” at the Westfälische Salzwelten, Bad Sassendorf – on Saturday, 17 October 2026, 6 to 10 pm.
