Kristallmeer

Several wave trains of different length and direction run over one another and lift the ground. The crystals stand on it, tilt with the slope and catch the light on the crests.

Now and then a drop falls and sends a ring through the surface. Touching an object triggers such a drop yourself.

Salt and sea belong together: what runs through the crystal field here as a swell stands at the beginning of salt — the brine, the salt-bearing water that is boiled down on the Hellweg. The museum itself is about exactly that: the permanent exhibition “Das weiße Wunder” at the Westfälische Salzwelten leads into underground vaults full of crystals that formed more than 250 million years ago, shows their lattice structure under salt microscopes and tells how brine becomes salt on the Hellweg — Bad Sassendorf is an old salters' town.

“Kristallmeer” can be experienced at the Ferromone family festival “Farbexplosion” at the Westfälische Salzwelten, Bad Sassendorf – on Saturday, 17 October 2026, 6 to 10 pm.

Placement in the post-digital model of positing

The ground is the positing, the crystal field only carries it out: the wave decides height and inclination, the individual crystal keeps its form. A touch lays a ring of its own into the field that overlays the given order for a while.
