A nine-metre-high cabinet in exposed concrete. On the end wall, “Kreuz” from the Raw Cube series stands in portrait format – from one video, divided between two projections placed one above the other.

A vertical strip is cut from the centre of the work video and divided between two projectors: the upper one hangs from a cross truss, the lower one stands on a floor stand in front of the wall and remains visible as part of the installation. Together they create an image of five by 5.6 metres.

The black ground of the work lets the projection surface stand out only slightly from the concrete wall; the light of the cubes grazes the rough surface.

The image measures 5.00 × 2.81 m with its bottom edge at 3.41 m; the throw distance is 3.95 m (throw ratio 0.79:1, lens shift -45% vertical). Calculated luminance on the wall: approx. 186 cd/m². One Panasonic PT-MZ882 projector with ET-ELW22 lens (short-throw zoom), 8,200 lumens, stands on a floor stand. The image measures 5.00 × 2.81 m with its bottom edge at 0.60 m; the throw distance is 4.80 m (throw ratio 0.96:1, lens shift 52% vertical). Calculated luminance on the wall: approx. 186 cd/m². Glossary

Throw ratio: Distance divided by image width. At 0.8 : 1, the projector for an image 6 m wide stands 4.8 m away.
Lens shift: Shifts the image within the lens without tilting the projector – so it stays rectangular.
Luminous flux: How much light the projector emits, in lumens.
Luminance: How bright the image surface appears to the eye, in candelas per square metre. In a dark room, about 60 is enough.
Bottom edge: The height of the bottom edge of the image above the floor.
Synchronised playback: Several projectors show parts of the same video; a media server keeps them in frame-accurate sync.
